'We use fourteen waves of the German panel data to ask whether individuals, after life and labour market events, return to some baseline wellbeing level. Although the strongest life satisfaction effect is often at the time of the event, significant lag and lead effects are present. Men are more affected by labour market events (unemployment and layoffs) and women by life events (marriage and divorce). Anticipation is an important component of individual wellbeing. Last, we show that happiness does not provide insurance against hard knocks: those with high baseline satisfaction are most adversely affected by negative events.' (author's abstract) ;
Abstract :
Die Autoren fragen auf der Grundlage von 14 Panel-Wellen aus Deutschland danach, ob Individuen nach bestimmten Lebens- und Arbeitsmarktereignissen zu irgendeiner Basisebene des Wohlbefindens zurueckkehren. Obwohl der staerkste Lebenszufriedenheits-Effekt oftmals zum Zeitpunkt des Ereignisses vorliegt, sind signifikante Verzoegerungs- und Vorlaufeffekte vorhanden. Maenner sind staerker durch Arbeitsmarktereignisse (Nichtbeschaeftigung und Entlassungen) und Frauen staerker durch Lebensereignisse (Heirat und Scheidung) beruehrt. Die Antizipation ist eine wichtige Komponente fuer das individuelle Wohlbefinden. Abschliessend wird gezeigt, dass Glueck keine Versicherung gegen harte Schlaege bieten kann: Individuen mit einer hohen Grundzufriedenheit werden durch negative Ereignisse am schwersten getroffen.
